Book Excerpt: The Rainbow Rim

…Ink stopped at a place called Parasawampitts, one of the Vista Points along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, so they could camp for the night. She asked him what it meant, Parasawampitts.

He shrugged. “How the hell should I know?”

Patsy felt dragged along with each yellow dash on the road since they left Shiprock. She was sober now, but still precarious.

“Ink, I think I wanna be alone for a while,” she said, almost as if now were the time of her confinement to end. And he seemed to know, nodded just once.

The Rainbow Rim: Interview with the Author

The Rainbow Rim started out as a screenplay with a male lead. Over a long period of time, I began to use the screenplay as a rather involved outline. The male hero became a woman, Patsy Pringle. I have experience working with the severely mentally ill and the mentally impaired. Martin, Patsy’s son, is more or less sentenced into an IMD – and Institute for the Mentally Disabled. He has some intellectual deficits but is high functioning. I’ve worked with people from the streets and set some of my own experiences into this story. I’ve always been interested in the themes of forgiveness and redemption. Shake it all up and you’ve got a road story, an adventure, a portrayal of small-town America 30 years ago, and a portrait of the prurience of big city street life.

The Rainbow Rim Now Out

This mainstream-contemporary coming-of-age story with elements of adventure is also a road story that moves quickly and keeps you on the edge. Patsy Pringle is an ex-prostitute and addict who’s trying to make amends to the son she abandoned 18 years before. Coming Soon – The Rainbow Rim

The Rainbow Rim, a road adventure novel, will be out soon. This story follows Patsy Pringle, an aging, one-time prostitute who can still turn heads, as she returns to the small, Illinois town where she was forced to give up her baby when she was just 16. She comes back to make amends to her son 18 years later, but ends up kidnapping him from a life wasted in an institution. They’re hunted by the boy’s father, a minister, who has an arrest warrant in one pocket and his brother, the town Sheriff, in the other.

Her son, Martin, has led a sheltered life, well-versed in the Bible, at least the verses that promise an eye for an eye. Left mentally impaired by Patsy’s overdose during her pregnancy after his father wanted Patsy to have an abortion, Martin promises Patsy that he wants to do his mother in once he finds her. Will he really carry through? Patsy doesn’t know but must conceal her real identity until she can convince her son that a fallen woman like herself – a harlot in Martin’s eyes – could possibly be the mother that he wants, and that he really needs.

Take a ride on the back of Patsy’s Harley from heartland prairie to L.A.’s skid row in this coming-of-age novel where a sheltered young man must discover what life’s really like beyond the sheltered limits of his small town.

The Dirt

A new title, The Dirt, now available from Giddings Street Press! Set in the Four Corner region of the American Southwest, this novel is a departure for me. Most of what I write is science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, mystery and horror. With The Dirt, I’ve chosen to explore mysticism. Is it even real?
